DJ Mix # 1: Dubstep: Despise / Brain F*ck

Dubstep is a genre of techno, born at the turn of the millennium, rooted deeply in the sod of the 2-Step and Garage music scenes of mid-1990s London rave culture. Interestingly, dubstep remained somewhat dormant in the 90s and post-millennium United States rave scenes until somewhat recently. With a surge of dubstep remixes of well-known artists like La Roux, Rhianna, and Bjork, popular DJ collectives like the Glitch Mob and Nero have resurrected the sinister sounds of dubstep in form of a darker revision. Cities with substantial Burning Man Festival populations such as San Francisco CA, Los Angeles CA, and Boulder CO all display dance music scenes with strong dubstep presence. One of my later electronic music obsessions, I started following dubstep more closely in 2000, after my first trip to Burning Man Festival. Seeing Freq Nasty spin dubstep in a Playa-dusted tent with hundreds of people dancing under a single blinding strobe light, surrounded by nothing else but sound and darkness reminded me of a grimy warehouse party. The way a rave is supposed to feel. Dubstep's deafening bass lines and dirty, almost-industrial-but-not-really tone left my mind feeling violated, my legs tired from dancing, and my organs massaged from a proper dose of bass vibration. A good dubstep mix combines militant mood swings ranging from serial-killer lullabies to serene breaks, fostering an unusual sound adventure. This combination of aggression and peaceful breaks is brought to the table in this week's featured mix by Despise from Denver, CO. Her mixes always provide an evil sound with technical skill and creative interludes perfect for mind terrorism.
